Vergina is a small town, located 13 km from Veria. The town became internationally famous in 1977, when the Greek archaeologist Manolis Andronikos unearthed the burial site of the kings of Macedon, including the tomb of Phillip II, father of Alexander the Great. The finds established the site as the ancient Aigai (Greek: Αιγαί). The modern town of Vergina consists a remarkable archaeological site for every museum-lover.

Seli: The National Ski Center Seli is the first organized ski center in the country. It was launched in 1934, when the first Panhellenic ski races were organized. Located at an altitude of 1530 m, it is 24 km from Veria, 95 km from Thessaloniki.

Philipos Veria

Philippos Veria

The main Athletic Association based in the city of Veria is Philippos Veria. It was officially founded in 1962 and their colors are red, white and blue.

Male Basketball

The basketball team of Philip Veria was created in 1962. Because it was the only basketball team in the region, they participated in the Second Class Championship of Thessaloniki. The team celebrated the league title a total of six times, namely during the seasons: 1967-1968 , 1969-1970 , 1973-1974 , 1975-1976 , 1976-1977 , 1979-1980 .

During the season 2009-10 Philip Veria took part in the championship of the Third National Men's Class. The win of 2nd place in the final league ensured its rise to the Second National Division. Finally, during the period 2012-2013 the group accompished one of the biggest goals, that is rising in the A2 category for the first time in its history.

PAOK: One Team One Story

Establishment

The Athletic Club of Constantinople (now Instanbul) Panthessalonikios or PAOK was founded on 20 April 1926.

The first titles

PAOK won their first title in 1971 and has won the Greek Cup trophy itself 3 times 1973, 2001, and 2003). They have also won two other times the Greek Championship (1975 and 1984) and are always playing in the top division in Greece.

European Route

PAOK Europe has many victories against the most powerful teams in European Leagues. For example the victory over Barcelona 1-0 at Toumba Stadium (1975), and recently the victory over Tottenham 1-2 at stadium (2011)

Present

PAOK wants to write new pages in history by having a major shareholder Mr Ivan Savvides and coach Hubei Stephens.

Black History Month in Veria's Public Library

In celebration of Black History Month, the American Corner of Veria’s Public Library and the State English Teachers’ Union of Emathia, gave us the opportunity to watch the movie-documentary ‘’Soundtrack for a Revolution’’. The movie tells the story of the American civil rights movement through its powerful music - the freedom songs protesters sang on picket lines, in mass meetings, and in jail cells as they fought for justice and equality. Freedom songs evolved from slave chants, from the labor movement, and especially from the black church. Music enabled blacks to sing words they could not say, and it was crucial in helping the protesters as they faced down brutal aggression with dignity and non-violence. The energy of the songs swept people up and empowered them to fight for their rights.

The movie managed to move us and teach us that freedom is one of the most important values for humanity, and as Martin Luther King said “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter”.

A Survey on Students' Dating Habits

(Based on a project from our coursebook QSE Intermediate)

This is a report on a survey of students’ dating habits. We gave a questionnaire to 200 students from all three grades of our school.

These are the questions we asked:

1. Where do you usually meet people your age?
2. Where do you go on a date?
3. Would you go out with someone you have met online?
4.  Do you tell the truth about yourself on the first date?
5.  What is your ideal partner like? 

The results were very interesting. We found that the most popular place for dates are cafes. A fairly large percentage (38%) would go out with someone they have met online. About 72 students said that they do not tell the truth about themselves on the first date. Finally the survey showed that for the majority of students good looks are not so important.The results are the following: 

Tousist Attractions in Central Macedonia Part 1

Macedonia is located in northern Greece and it includes the prefectures: Chalkidiki, Drama , Florina, Grevena, Imathia, Kastoria, Kavala, Kilkis, Kozani, Pella, Pieria, Serres and Thessaloniki.

Thessaloniki, often referred to internationally as Salonica, is the second-largest city in Greece and the most important centre of the area. Built near the sea, it is a modern metropolis bearing the marks of its stormy history and its cosmopolitan character, which give it a special beauty and charm. Someone who visits Thessaloniki for the first time has to make sure to visit at least the following sites:

-The Byzantine churches

-The White Tower (15th century), the hallmark of the city.

-The Old City (Ano Polis), in which many notable examples of Ottoman and traditional Macedonian architecture still stand, alongside humble dwellings of the refugees who reached Thessaloniki, after the Greek defeat in Asia Minor, in 1922.

- The Museums (the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Byzantine Culture, the Folk and Ethnographic Museum, the State Museum of Contemporary Art, the Thessaloniki Cinema Museum, the Thessaloniki Science Center and Technology Museum and many more.)

Veria: Veria belongs to the prefecture of Imathia. Here there are many museums and among them the Archaeological Museum of Veria which is one of the most important archaeological museums in Macedonia. It houses and exhibits findings from Imathia Prefecture, dated on Hellenistic and Roman era. Unfortunately the Museum building is small and can not include other findings, dated even since pre-historic and iron ages, which are kept in store rooms. The garden of the Museum is full of marble findings, like grave stelae, altars and inscriptions. 

The "Step" of Apostle Paul: This is the place where St. Paul, the Apostle preached during his 2 visits in Veria, around 50-51 AD and 57 AD. The site is a shrine of World Christianity. Every year, on June, a religious and cultural festival is organized, named "Pavlia". 

The Byzantine Museum: This building was constructed in 1908-1911 and was a water powered cylindrical flour mill. It was working until 1960 and then abandoned. In 1981 it was on fire and only the external walls were saved. Recently renovated, it is now the Byzantine Museum of Veria.

Football Teams of our region: Aris-Thessaloniki

Aris FC is the football department of Aris Thessaloniki . It participates in the First National Championship. It has fought in almost all leagues of the first national and has won a total of four titles, three leagues and a cup. Its headquarters is the stage Cleanthes Vikelidis in Thessaloniki . Aris Thessaloniki was founded in 1914 in Thessaloniki and was the first Greek club founded in the city. Furthermore, Aris has very good appearances in Europa League. It excluded the Europa League champion Athletic Madrit. After that it drew with England’s champion Manchester City. Nowadays Aris is fighting for its saving at Super League.

Traditional Cuisine of Veria

One of the most famous dishes of the region are fasoulontavas (φασουλονταβάς) , i.e. baked beans. It comes from the word “tava” which in Turkish means pan.

Pies (pites-πίτες), pastry with filling such as cheese or spinach or minced meat or vegetables. 

Meatballs (keftedakia-κεφτεδάκια), is mince meat with yeasty bread  in the shape of a small ball usually fried.

Fried, (tigania-τηγανιά) is fried pork cut into small pieces. 

Sarmades (σαρμάδες), is a mixture of rice with minced meat wrapped in cabbage leaves.

Revani (ρεβανί), is Veria’s specialty. It is a syrupy cake served with 

icecream in the summer.

Syrupy donuts (loukoumades - λουκουμάδες), is fried dough dipped in syrup and honey. The restaurants and taverns usually serve them after dinner as a treat.
